All American striper anglers should see this fishery because these native stripers are so prolific. Some anglers catch upwards of 100 bass in a day averaging 10lb with 20lb plus fish mixed in. They overwinter in the estuary until ice-out in March or April. The legal fishing season starts on April 15th. In May the adult stripers make daily movements testing the water temperatures for suitable spawning temperature of between 55 and 60F. They usually spawn about the first week of June. After they spawn, most fish slowly return to the Gulf by July, returning again in September. Their predominent forage are the rainbow smelt and the stripers blitz on them on the surface. There are also river herring and other forage species. This river is well suited for single-hand fly outfits in the 8-10 wt class and a 7wt Spey rod is adequate. Anglers and guides fish from everything from kayaks, canoes, jet boats, bass boats, to walleye style bow-riders. There are places that are great for wading too.
